Visident the "visiting-dentist" service was born in 1983 when a Queens, N.Y. dentist, Dr. William Stone, saw an immediate need for dental health care for the elderly, homebound, and the infirm. These patients were often the most neglected, and yet needed the most care. From the very beginning of his career, Dr. Stone has been involved with the care of elderly patients. His first position out of dental school, was working for a successful dentist in Manhattan known as "The Denture King of New York". As a result of the great number of full and partial dentures made in his office, patients would come from all over the country, to have "The Denture King", and his staff, fabricate inexpensive well fitting dentures. Dr. Stone's experience working for this dentist would prove to be invaluable in the years to come. Around the same time, he was asked by his great aunt then homebound with multiple sclerosis, to do some dental work for her, which then led him to treat many of her friends in similar situations. The word soon got out about this dentist who made house calls, and Dr. Stone began treating more and more homebound patients. Soon after, In 1968, Dr. Stone was asked to treat a patient in a Bronx nursing home. It was at this time that he began to assemble the beginnings of his mobile office. With the advent of new technology and some of his own inventions, Dr. Stone was able to efficiently bring the dental office to the patient. He soon began treating many patients in their homes, and did so until newly passed legislation made it possible for him to rapidly expand his practice. Up until 1979, Dentists were not allowed to advertise. Once this barrier was surmounted, it then became possible to reach the general public, and in 1983 Visident was born. Dr. Stone now has a highly skilled staff of dentists and dental hygienists covering the metropolitan area, dedicated to bringing the best possible care to the homebound population. |
